How to Troubleshoot Common Garage Door Issues

If your garage door isn’t opening or closing correctly, it may be time to call a professional. However, if you’re handy, you can troubleshoot some common issues on your own.

One of the most common problems with automatic garage doors is the safety sensors not lining up properly. This issue can be as simple as something obstructing the sensor eyes.

Damaged Photo Eyes

Garage doors are a vital part of any home, and they are equipped with safety features to ensure that the door doesn’t close on someone or something. These features include photo eyes, which are sensors located on either side of the door about six inches off the ground.

These sensors work by sending an invisible beam across the opening of your garage door. If anything interrupts the beam, it breaks the circuit, causing the door to reverse its direction and open instead of closing.

Photo eyes can be delicate, so if one is damaged or misaligned, it might cause your garage door to malfunction. To troubleshoot this issue, locate each sensor and check its LED lights to see if they’re illuminated or flickering.

Damaged Rollers

Rollers are an important part of your garage door system that allow your garage to open and close smoothly. However, worn or damaged rollers can cause serious problems that require a professional repair.

Loud noises when opening and closing your garage door are a common sign that it’s time to replace your rollers. This is especially true with older doors that haven’t been properly maintained or lubricated.

Poor lubrication: If your rollers don’t have the proper amount of lubrication, they won’t move smoothly and can even break off from their track. Rusted rails are also a problem, as are tracks that aren’t aligned correctly.

Dented tracks: Bent or distorted tracks are a common reason for rollers to come off the track. Using a hammer or rubber mallet, carefully straighten the tracks back into place to keep your door working smoothly.

The most basic garage door rollers are plastic. These builder-grade rollers last only a few years, and won’t perform as well as the more expensive options. Steel rollers with ball bearings last about 10 to 15 years, and nylon rollers can last 12 to 20 years depending on the quality.

Dirty Tracks

Dirty garage door tracks can be a pain. Fortunately, a quick scrub and swish of the track cleaner will keep your cherished possessions looking fresh and running smoothly.

To get started, vacuum the track using a handheld or thin attachment for your home vacuum. This will remove loose debris and dust, such as cobwebs or dandruff.

For a thorough clean, use a quality cleaning solution such as a combination of dish soap and water. You can also opt for a spray lubricant, such as an automotive based product, to save yourself the hassle of manually applying it.

Lastly, you should try to make time for a more thorough inspection of the tracks after your thorough cleaning. This will reveal any hidden rust or dingy areas that you may have overlooked. This will make your next clean a breeze and your home more livable for longer.

Faulty Sensors

Faulty sensors can be a major problem for many homeowners. They can cause a garage door to open or close incorrectly, potentially causing injury.

The sensors in your garage door system send and receive infrared beams. When they come into contact with something they will stop and reverse the closing motion.

If a sensor is not working properly, the LED lights will either blink or go out. That usually indicates that there is a problem with the power supply or an obstruction in the path of the light signal.

A common problem is dust, which can accumulate on the lens of your sensor. This can occur if you don’t clean them often or if you live in an area with a lot of pollution and wind.
